(a) From which word is the term nation derived?

Ans:- From the Latin word ‘Natio’.


(b) Who advocated the principle of one nation one state’ after the First World War?

Ans:- President Woodrow Wilson of America.


(c) Do Nation and Nationality carry the same meaning?

Ans:- No.


(d) Who is the main supporter of the Principle of One Nation, One State?

Ans:- J.S. Mill and Woodrow Wilson.


(e) Write two elements which promote Nationalism.

Ans: (i) Common motherland

(ii) Common language.


2. Define Nation.

Ans:- A Nation is a community of persons living in a particular territory and possessing a number of common characteristics such as race, language, culture etc. and possessing a separate political organisation.


3. Mention any two merits of Nationalism.

Ans:- (i) Nationalism strengthens the sense of unity and integrity among the people of diverse race, language, religion etc. who live within the same territorial boundary.

(ii) The sense of nationalism inspires the people to work hard for acquiring self-reliance specially in economic field.


4. Mention any two demerits of Nationalism.

Ans:- (i) To put excessive stress on nationalism means to destroy the inner quality of the individual and to create hindrances on the development of human personality.

(ii) Most of the wars occurred in this world due to the sense of extreme nationalism among the people.


5. Mention the differences between state and nation.

Ans:- In ordinary language, the term state and nation are often used indiscriminately. But in political science ‘state’ and ‘nation’ are not synonymous terms. For example-

(i) A state is consisted of four elements viz, population, territory, government and sovereignty. On the other hand, nationality means a group of people occupying a territory independent or desiring to be independent and united together by certain common characteristics like race, religion, language etc.

(ii) A state must possess sovereign power. A nation may not possess sovereignty.

(iii) Nationality is psychological concept whereas statehood is a political concept.

(iv) Nationality is a possession, statehood is an enforceable obligation.

(v) Nationalism is a wider concept than the state.


6. Give the meaning of Nationalism.

Ans:- Generally, speaking nationalism means devotion for the nation. It is an emotional form to express the feeling of nationalism in a unified manner. This force inspires nationalism to be united in the form of a Nation.


7. Give two definitions of Nationalism.

Ans:- (i) According to Hayes, “Nationalism is a unique combination of Nafionality, Nation, State and Patriotism”.

(ii) According to Hans Kohin, “Nationalism is first and foremost a state of mind and act of consciousness.”
